I know this situation because I have been an expat for 8 years.
My expatriation in Spain didn’t start off as smoothly as I had hoped. I arrived with a low-intermediate level of Spanish, but most of my daily life was still in French and English. My friends and colleagues spoke English, and my partner—although Spanish—communicated with me in English as well. As a result, not only was I not practicing Spanish, but it was also easy to rely on others to help me or handle things for me.
Over time, I realized that despite living in Spain, I wasn’t improving the way I had expected. I wasn’t hearing or using the language enough to make real progress.
After nearly two years, I decided to take action. I enrolled in Spanish conversation classes and started actively learning new vocabulary and expressions through a self-study course. That’s when everything began to shift. I could understand more of what people were saying, felt more confident in everyday situations, and finally knew how to respond. I could go just about anywhere without that anxious feeling that someone might speak to me and I wouldn’t know what to say.

My name is Laurie. I’m French, a certified French teacher, and the founder of Frenchie Classes.
I’ve spent most of my adult life as both a language learner and an expat. I lived in England for five years and have lived in Spain for nearly four. I’ve gone through the full journey of learning English and adapting to a new culture—and I’ve done it all over again with Spanish! That’s why I truly understand the challenges expats face when it comes to learning a new language and building a life in a foreign country.
After several years of teaching in both public and private schools, I decided to create Frenchie Classes—my online school dedicated to helping expats in France. My goal is to teach the real, everyday French spoken by natives, and to give expats the tools they need to handle daily situations with confidence. I also aim to help learners better understand French culture and how the system works.
This is the kind of support I wish I had when I moved abroad, and it’s why I’m so passionate about guiding and empowering expats through practical, accessible language learning.
